VAT Calculator in South Africa

South Africa calls the tax Value-Added Tax (VAT). Registered vendors generally charge the 15% standard rate on taxable supplies. SARS confirms that 15% has applied since 1 April 2018; specified supplies can instead be zero-rated, while exempt supplies fall outside taxable supplies.

The zero rate is not a general reduced rate. Whether a supply is zero-rated or exempt depends on the VAT Act and the facts of the transaction, not only on the product name.

For a taxable price of R1 000 before VAT, 15% VAT is R150 and the total is R1 150. The calculator adds or removes the selected percentage and separates the taxable amount, VAT and total.

It does not determine whether a supply is zero-rated or exempt, test VAT-registration duties, calculate input-tax deductions, or prepare a VAT return. The result is an orientation check, not personalised tax advice.
