GST formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from $100, a 10% rate gives $10 in tax and $110 total.

Starting from $110, the tax-free amount is $100 and the tax is $10.

Australian GST: 10% since 1 July 2000

Australia calls the tax Goods and Services Tax (GST). It is a broad-based 10% tax on most goods, services and other items sold or consumed in Australia. The Australian Taxation Office states that GST began on 1 July 2000 and the rate has not changed.

Australia does not use a general reduced GST rate. Some supplies are GST-free, including basic food, exports and most health and education services, while input-taxed sales follow different credit rules.

Australian dollar example and what the calculator covers

For a taxable price of A$1,000 before GST, the 10% GST is A$100 and the total is A$1,100. The calculator can add 10% or separate it from a GST-inclusive amount.

It does not decide whether a sale is GST-free or input taxed, test registration or input-tax-credit entitlement, or calculate wine equalisation tax, luxury car tax, customs duty or excise. The result is an orientation aid, not personalised tax advice.
