VAT formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from €100, a 23% rate gives €23 in tax and €123 total.

Starting from €123, the tax-free amount is €100 and the tax is €23.

Ireland VAT rates in force from 1 January 2026

Ireland applies Value-Added Tax (VAT). Revenue's current table lists the 23% standard rate, 13.5% reduced rate, 9% second reduced rate and 4.8% livestock rate. The current row is effective from 1 January 2026.

The same table gives a 4.5% flat-rate compensation percentage for farmers. That percentage is a compensation mechanism for qualifying flat-rate farmers, not a general VAT rate for arbitrary sales. Zero rating and exemptions apply only to supplies covered by the legislation.

Euro examples and calculator scope

On €100 before tax, 23% VAT is €23 and the total is €123. At 13.5% the total is €113.50, and at 9% it is €109.

The calculator performs percentage arithmetic for the selected rate. It does not classify the supply, calculate the farmer compensation scheme, establish the VAT place or time of supply, test deductibility, or prepare a return. The result is orientative and is not personalised tax advice.
