VAT formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from E 100, a 15% rate gives E 15 in tax and E 115 total.

Starting from E 115, the tax-free amount is E 100 and the tax is E 15.

Eswatini VAT: 15% since 1 August 2018, with defined zero-rated supplies

Eswatini introduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on 1 April 2012 to replace Sales Tax. Legal Notice 112 of 2018 set the rate at 15% from 1 August 2018. VAT applies to most local goods and services and to taxable imports.

Direct exports can be zero-rated when the evidence required by the Eswatini Revenue Service is held. The official zero-rate schedule also covers specified goods and services, so 0% cannot be assumed merely because a product seems essential.

Lilangeni example and imported-service reverse charge

A taxable supply of E1,000 before VAT produces E150 of tax and a total of E1,150. The local currency is the lilangeni (SZL), shown as E in ERS examples.

A business receiving taxable services from a foreign supplier may have to apply the 15% reverse charge. ERS gives the example of an E100,000 imported service producing E15,000 of VAT and requires the declaration and payment within 30 days of the invoice date.

This calculator only performs the selected percentage calculation. It does not decide zero rating or exemption, test the E900,000 registration threshold, handle reverse-charge reporting, deduct input VAT, or add customs, excise, fuel, alcohol or tobacco levies. The result is orientative and not personalised tax advice.
