GST formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from $100, a 15% rate gives $15 in tax and $115 total.

Starting from $115, the tax-free amount is $100 and the tax is $15.

New Zealand GST: one broad 15% rate and specific zero rating

New Zealand uses Goods and Services Tax (GST). GST-registered businesses generally charge 15% on taxable supplies. This rate has applied since 1 October 2010.

New Zealand has no general reduced GST band. Certain transactions are taxed at 0% when the legal conditions are met, including qualifying exports, some land transactions and a sale of a going concern. Exempt supplies, such as many financial services and residential rents, are treated differently from zero-rated supplies.

New Zealand dollar example and overseas supplier rules

On NZ$1,000 before GST, the tax is NZ$150 and the total is NZ$1,150. For an inclusive total, the GST component is calculated with the statutory 3/23 fraction.

Overseas businesses may need to collect GST on remote services and low-value imported goods; overseas marketplace rules for listed services have applied since 1 April 2024. Offshore gambling duty is a separate obligation for covered providers. The calculator only performs 15% arithmetic. It does not test registration, residence, zero-rating, exemptions, customs treatment or offshore gambling duty. The result is orientative, not personalised tax advice.
