Sales Tax formulas and examples

Use these formulas to check the amount added to a tax-free price or removed from a tax-included total.

Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from £100, a 10% rate gives £10 in tax and £110 total.

Starting from £110, the tax-free amount is £100 and the tax is £10.

South Sudan uses schedule-based Sales Tax, not a single national VAT rate

The tax named in South Sudan's legislation is Sales Tax. Official financial acts apply different rates by category rather than one general VAT percentage. The FY 2024/25 Act uses a 1% to 20% range for domestically produced goods and a 20% rate for hotel, restaurant and bar services and for imported goods. It came into force when signed on 25 November 2024; an SSRA instruction dated 27 November directs officers to apply it until advised otherwise.

There is therefore no official basis for treating the calculator's 10% preset as a universal South Sudanese VAT rate. The applicable Sales Tax must be read from the current category schedule.

South Sudanese pound example and what the calculator leaves out

For a category taxed at 20%, a taxable amount of SSP 1,000 produces SSP 200 of Sales Tax and a total of SSP 1,200. A category assigned 10% would instead total SSP 1,100; the category, not the calculator, determines which percentage is lawful.

This tool only adds or removes the selected percentage. It does not select a schedule entry, calculate the customs value of imports, add excise duty, or determine exemptions for diplomatic and donor-funded supplies. Its result is orientative and is not personalised tax advice.

Official South Sudan tax sources and review date

Fiscal content reviewed on 11 July 2026. Confirm the current category and rate with the South Sudan Revenue Authority before using a result for compliance.

Selected country

Enter the amount and select the corresponding VAT rate. Indicate whether the price includes VAT or excludes VAT and the calculator will automatically show the result.

The result shows the taxable base, the VAT amount and the final total. This allows you to check prices, quotes and invoices quickly and accurately.
