Add tax

Total = tax-free price x (1 + rate / 100)

Remove tax

Tax-free price = tax-included total / (1 + rate / 100)

Tax amount

Tax = tax-free price x rate / 100

Quick example

Starting from €100, a 18% rate gives €18 in tax and €118 total.

Starting from €118, the tax-free amount is €100 and the tax is €18.

Malta VAT: 18% standard rate with 12%, 7%, 5% and 0% rates

Malta applies Value Added Tax (VAT) at 18% unless a defined reduced rate or exemption applies. The Malta Tax and Customs Administration lists reduced rates of 12%, 7%, 5% and 0%. The 12% rate took effect on 1 January 2024 for specified services; 7% includes licensed tourist accommodation, while 5% covers defined supplies such as electricity and certain medical accessories.

Zero rating is an exemption with credit and is not the same as an exemption without credit. Classification can depend on the exact supply or, for goods, its customs code.

Euro examples and the separate accommodation eco-contribution

On €100 before tax, 18% VAT gives a total of €118. The same net amount totals €112 at 12%, €107 at 7% or €105 at 5%.

Tourist accommodation can also carry an Environmental Contribution introduced on 20 June 2016. Official guidance states €0.50 per person per night, capped at €5 per person per visit for people over 18. That contribution is separate from VAT.

The calculator covers its selectable 18%, 7% and 5% arithmetic. It does not currently provide the 12% or 0% choices, classify exemptions, or add the accommodation contribution, customs duty or excise. The result is orientative, not personalised tax advice.
